Breaking Free

I spotted this ash tree on a walk through Deep Dale nature reserve near Buxton, Derbyshire. Ash trees are abundant in the White Peak as they thrive on lime rich earth. I l0ve the way they force their roots into the limestone cliffs. This strong tree appears to be emerging from the rockface, and is strikingly human in form.

Most of the earth used in this painting was collected from around the White Peak. I had to cheat a bit for the blue sky - this pigment is from a turquoise bracelet I bought from a shop and ground into dust.

Medium: Earth

Size: 2' x 1'

Date: 2009
